Emine Erdogan: Shimon Peres lied

Turkish PM's wife says Shimon Peres lied in Davos

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's wife Emine Erdogan said on Thursday that Israeli president Shimon Peres lied at the tense Gaza in Davos.
“Everything (Israeli President Simon) Peres said was lie,” Emine Erdogan told reporters in Davos after she burst into tears.

Tayyip Erdogan stormed out of an angry debate on the Gaza war with Peres at the Davos forum on Thursday. Erdogan said his reaction targeted the moderator of the session not Peres or the Israeli people.

Emine Erdogan organized earlier this month an Istanbul meeting entitled "Women for peace in Palestine” in which first ladies from Muslim countries condemned the Israeli offensive on Gaza and called on the international community to end the suffering of women and children there.

Erdogan hailed after Davos walkout

Turkey's prime minister has returned home from the World Economic Forum in Davos to a warm welcome after he stormed out of a debate over Israel's war on the Gaza Strip.

More than 5,000 people, many waving Palestinian and Turkish flags, greeted Recep Tayyip Erdogan after his aeroplane touched down early on Friday.

Erdogan walked out of a televised debate on Thursday with Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, after the moderator refused to allow him to rebut Peres' justification about the war.

Before storming out, Erdogan told Shimon Peres, the Israeli president:
"You are killing people."
At least 1,300 Palestinians were killed during Israel's 22-day aerial, naval and ground assault on Gaza. Thirteen Israeli citizens died over the same period.'

'No return'

During the heated panel discussion in the Swiss town, Peres told Erdogan that Turkey would have acted in the same manner as Israel if rockets had been falling on Istanbul.

Moderator David Ignatius, a Washington Post columnist, then told Erdogan that he had "only a minute" to respond to a lengthy monologue by Peres.

Erdogan said: "I find it very sad that people applaud what you said. There have been many people killed. And I think that it is very wrong and it is not humanitarian."

Ignatius twice attempted to finish the debate, saying, "We really do need to get people to dinner."

Erdogan then said: "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. I don't think I will come back to Davos after this."

'Understandable'
Amr Moussa, the secretary-general of the Arab League and former Egyptian foreign minister, said Erdogan's action was understandable.
"Mr Erdogan said what he wanted to say and then he left. That's all. He was right," he said, adding that Israel "doesn't listen".

Turkey has in recent months brokered indirect talks between Israel and Syria over the Golan Heights region, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967.
The exchange between Erdogan and Peres took place on the second day of the summit, where business and political leaders have been discussing trade, financial regulation and global security.
Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary-general, used the forum to announce the launch of an emergency appeal for $613m to help Palestinians recover from Israel's attack on Gaza.
Gaza appeal
The UN secretary-general said he had been deeply moved by his visit to Gaza and that he had given his word that the UN would help the Gazans in their hour of need.

]
He said the appeal for funds covered the requirements of the UN and other aid organisations for the next six to nine months.
Ban said it would help provide aid such as medical care and clean water and that an appeal for longer-term needs would be launched later.
Asked about achieving peace in Gaza, Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel's Likud party who was attending the forum, swiftly turned his answer to Iran, which he said was in a "100-yard dash" to get nuclear weapons.

While he did not specify any planned military action, Netanyahu said if Iranian rulers were "neutralised", the danger posed to Israel and others by Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in south Lebanon would be reduced.

Meanwhile, Manouchechr Mottaki, Iran's foreign minister, who is also in Davos, said Tehran had taken note of the intention of Barack Obama, the US president, to withdraw troops from Iraq and believed he should also pull troops out of Afghanistan.
Mottaki told a panel at the forum that Obama had "courage" to say which of the policies of George Bush, the former US president, he disagreed with and said his approach marked a "milestone" away from an era of "might equals right".

The Peshmerga stand in front of the Polling Centres in Tuz Khurmatu

Iraq’s Provincial Elections: Kurds are positioning their Peshmerga militias in front of the polling centres of Tuz Khurmatu .

ITC Media Kerkuk - COMMUNIQUE
29th January 2009

Yesterday, two police members, one of whom was an officer, have been killed in front of one of the polling centres in the city of Tuz Khurmatu (75 Km south of Kerkuk).
As usual, the identities of the perpetrators of these assassinations are not known.

Using these attacks as a pretext, the Kurds have brought the Suleymaniya battalion from the fourth squad, known as Peshmerga, to Tuz Khurmatu and they have positioned 15 elements of this battalion to each of the city’s polling centres with an excuse of weakness in security. This, despite the fact that a battalion from the Governorate of Salaheddin had arrived immediately after the attack as has been confirmed by an official source from the Ministry of Interior.

When the Tuz Khurmatu branch of the Iraqi Turkmen Front objected to this procedure the Kurds suggested they would position their Peshmerga 200 meters from the polling centres. ITF refused this proposal and demanded the withdrawal of the Peshmerga outside the boundaries of the city.

The Iraqi Turkmen Front asked the government authorities to intervene immediately and together with other political parties ITF demanded that the security of the polling districts should be under the responsibility of the Ministry of Interior in order to ensure the transparency and impartiality of the elections so as to avoid the vote rigging and forgeries committed by the Kurds during the January 2005 elections.

"The Hidden Invasion of Iraq" by Paulo Casaca MEP

Extract from Member of EU Parliament, Paulo CASACA’s (*) book:
“The Hidden Invasion of Iraq”.

Regarding the Funds the EU allocated for the reconstruction of Iraq and the Iraqi Electoral Process

Page 182 to page 187

QUOTE:
Being the spokesperson for the socialists of the Budgetary Control Committee, this is my most important responsibility within the European Parliament. I was particularly interested to know the whereabouts of the 800 plus million Euro that had been approved within the European Budget for the Iraqi reconstruction in the first five years of the post-Saddam era, and I was puzzled to realised that none of my Iraqi friends, members of the Parliament, Governors or former ministers, had ever heard of any European cooperation effort to Iraq.

Although modest in comparison with the bilateral budgetary efforts of the main Allied forces, the European budget is indeed the largest contributor to the International Reconstruction Fund Facility for Iraq (IRFFI) and this should be visible somehow.

This was my starting point for a query to the European Commission on what has happened with the European budget for Iraqi reconstruction. This would prove to be an exhausting and time-consuming task, but in the end rewarding. The Commission took several months ignoring my questions before answering with an eight-page summary made in partnership with the Iraqi Government. I found this partnership rather awkward.

There I learned that the European Commission had hired a consultant who claimed to be an international organisation as a “global facility” for organising its action in Iraq, without tendering procedures with the argument of urgency (although the contract was established by the end of 2006, more than three years after the invasion).

I learned afterwards that contracts had been established with the very same company for similar tasks in Palestine and Lebanon, always without public tendering procedures.

The bulk of the European funds was attributed to the IRFFI and was managed by the UN and the World Bank. As for the rest, the Commission had made some bilateral contracts with UN agencies and with the Iraqi authorities and substantially financed the Iraqi electoral process.

I could hardly believe that the European Commission had spent all this money on the Iraqi elections and would not even have invited the European Parliament to monitor the elections. Actually, the Commission did not make any thorough public appraisal of the electoral process and did not respond to the generalised criticism of the electoral failures. Given the general attitude of the Commission I would not have been surprised if they had not even bothered to make any sort of observation in spite of the 136 Million they invested in the electoral process.

The answers we received from the UN or the World Bank regarding the funds used in a multilateral way were far from satisfactory, to say the least, and we decided to ask for on the spot controls of a least some of the huge numbers of schools, hospitals and all sorts of infrastructure that the European funds had presumably helped to build or rehabilitate.

The answers seemed confused and elusive and always hard to obtain. I asked to accompany the Commission in a mission to Baghdad to get a glimpse of what was going on over there, but the Commission turned down my request since it would not respect the independence of the institutions. Surprisingly, this explanation came from the very same European executive that answered the Parliamentary Budget Controls’ queries in joint papers with the Iraqi Government.

Evidence on the lack of reliability of the Iraqi authorities regarding public funds was everywhere and could be seen in the main European as well as American media. Iraq was indeed classified as the second most corrupt country in the World, only bypassed by Haiti. Anyway, I did my best to ensure the Commission could not argue with lack of information and handed them extensive media reports on the general Iraqi mismanagement.

Finally, the European Commission proposed the participation of COCOBU in an observation mission that would be organised by the World Bank. The World Bank duly met with COCOBU. By this time many of my colleagues were also very curious to find out what had happened to EU funds in Iraq.

A mission was organised to Nasyriah. The meeting point was at a hotel in Abu Dhabi, early in the morning of 18 May 2008. After we were supplied with helmets and bullet proof vests, we embarked in a military Italian aircraft to Tallil, the airfield of an enormous military complex in the Southern flank of Nasyriah.

As we got there, we were told that there would be no visits to the famous projects we had been so curious to see for security reasons. Actually, we never left the military compound during our stay, although it was huge and comprised, among other things, the ancient ruins of Ur with its famous Ziguratt.

The World Bank, which was supposed to have had the idea of the mission and which had prepared the participation of our committee for quite some time did not bother to show up or to give us an explanation in advance of its absence.

The team leader of the Dhi Qar Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT)/ Reconstruction Support Unit (RSU), Anna Prouse, a bright and active Italian lady, showed us a mobile surgery hospital offered by the Italian cooperation performing eye surgeries. This was our only chance to get in touch with common Iraqi citizens and with something that was really working for the benefit of Iraqis (although not financed by our European budget).

For the rest, we had the opportunity to hear the political speech of the local Governor as well as the speech of the Iraqi general in command plus theatrical performances, music and the rest of entertaining activities, the whole of it amounting to a typical tourist political act with the main difference that all of it was performed in a heavily guarded security perimeter.

So, although the visit was of little use to learn about the real Iraq, it was very useful to understand the logic of the main actors in the financial cooperation effort. With the exception of the World Bank and some embassies, all the main financial actors in this reconstruction effort were over there, namely representatives of several UN agencies.

The UN people included two Iraqi refugees who were hired in Amman to help the reconstruction effort. One of them was an Armenian doctor from Basra and the other a Baghdad Kurdish engineer. I found the UN agencies’ idea brilliant, although very telling on the political solution to the problem: to allow refugees, for the most part professionals, to come back and help their country out of the problems of “capacity building” (using the Euro-jargon in the meantime fully absorbed by the local Iraqi Governor).

Otherwise the UN teams were made of people – interesting, kind and humble for the most part – who really reflected an idea of trans-national commitment for human values that you normally associate with the UN.

The presentation of the work of the several UN agencies was not outstanding, and one got the idea that the several agencies were basically doing the same sort of things using the same sort of opaque wording to describe what they were doing. The Iraqi people, however, conveyed the image of being actively engaged in real productive work on behalf of Iraq.

The election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United Sates represents an historic American event and a landmark milestone in the story of Iraq.

President Obama's plan to bring US combat troops home in 16 months, however, raises important security questions.

Will militias, death squads and al-Qaeda resume their attacks against the Iraqi government? Will Iran re-activate its agents in an attempt to dominate Iraqi politics?
But perhaps the two most important questions to be asked are: Will the US departure afford Iraqi politicians a chance to rectify the political process, especially the sectarian quota system and the controversial constitution? Will Iraq's politicians put the interests of the nation above personal and partisan interests?

Our guests this week are former US ambassador to Iraq David Newton, who is also a scholar at the Middle East Institute; Peter Harling, the director of the Iraq-Syria-Lebanon Project at the International Crisis Group; and Iraqi elder statesman and member of the Iraqi Parliament Adnan Pachachi.

The Strength of Palestinian Children

Watch this child talk about life under the occupation. He is probably 5 or 6 years old, no older than 7. I have pasted a rough translation afterwards.

“We want the world to come and see us and see our children, how they are locked in the classrooms (UNRWA Schools) sitting on the floor without mattresses or blankets. No food, no water, no electricity, is it a life? It is a siege, this is the biggest siege for Israel.

Come and see how we are all living, thrown aside. We don’t play we don’t laugh, we can’t learn or have fun, also we cant watch TV or cartoon shows. When we open TV, the only thing we see is funerals, death, fire, tanks, shooting and invasions. I don’t ever see children’s TV shows or cartoons to watch and enjoy and learn from. It’s all about siege its all about the invasion and watching the shooting.

No food, no water, no drink, there is nothing. We are thrown aside like beggars. While other people are living in peace, playing laughing and happy, we are under siege, we have been under siege for almost 2 years, we don’t eat, drink, we don’t do anything.
They won’t even open the borders to let in a little bit of food or anything else.”

EU agrees to take Iran group (PMOI) off terror list

EU agrees to take Iran group off terror list
Reuters

European states agreed on Monday to remove exiled Iranian opposition group the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran (PMOI) from an EU list of banned terrorist groups, an EU official said.

The official confirmed EU foreign ministers approved a decision to remove it from a list that includes Palestinian Hamas and Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers. The decision follows a number of court rulings against its inclusion on the blacklist.

"What we are doing today is abiding by the resolution of the European court," EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana told reporters just before the ministers finalized the decision.

The PMOI is the group which exposed Iran's covert nuclear programme in 2002. It began as a leftist-Islamist opposition to the late Shah of Iran and has bases in Iraq.

Western analysts say its support in Iran is limited because of its collaboration with Iraq during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war. It remains banned in the United States.

The decision means that the PMOI will now be able to raise funds in Europe, but may not be the end of a years-long saga.

France announced last week an appeal against the December judgment of the European Court of First Instance which called for the delisting of the group, and EU officials stress that court ruling was based on procedure rather than substance.

"This does not mean the court does not think the PMOI is a terrorist group," one EU official said. "We are taking it out for procedural reasons."

PMOI allies have repeatedly accused the EU -- which has led efforts to persuade Iran to curb a nuclear programme suspected as a cover for the atom bomb -- of seeking to "appease" Tehran by keeping the group blacklisted.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband insisted that the delisting of the PMOI should have no effect on international diplomacy aimed at persuading Tehran to curb uranium enrichment.

"We have to find a way to respect the court judgment ... I think the Iranian standoff with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) is very clear. During 2009 there will and should be significant focus on this issue.

Erdogan in Brussels as Turkey's EU ambitions face decisive year

Ian Traynor in Brussels, Robert Tait in Istanbul

The Guardian, Monday 19 January 2009

Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, arrived in Brussels last night for the first time in four years, with the aim of resuscitating his country's flagging efforts to join the European Union.

Diplomats and senior officials in Brussels believe that this year is likely to be decisive for Ankara's EU ambitions.
Erdogan's first visit to the EU headquarters since membership negotiations began in 2005 could signal a shift in his government's European policies, following two years of power struggles at home and a souring of relations with the EU. The prime minister has appointed a close aide, Egemen Bagis, to take charge of the European negotiations and has established a government department for EU talks.

"Better late than never," said Cengiz Aktar, an analyst at an Istanbul university. "After four years of negotiations, the prime minister has done the right thing by appointing a sole minister to run EU affairs in this country."

Anlayan varsa YeniHaber´e yazabilir..

YENİHABER GERÇEKLERİ TÜM ÇIPLAKLIĞI YAZIYOR,TAKİP EDİYOR...YENİHABER BELÇİKA TÜRKLERİNİN GÜR VE CESUR SESİ.. NEREDE TÜRKLER ORADA YENİHABER..

4 Kurdish parties propose to reform regional government

January 10, 2009 ARBIL / Aswat al-Iraq:

Four Kurdish parties on Saturday submitted a project that embraces political and economic reformations in state institutes in the Kurdistan region.

This came during a press conference when the four parties also suggested a shape for the relations between the region and Baghdad.“We demand that the ruling system in the region be reformed,” Fatah Zakhoiee told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.“The president of the region should be able to do his job, as is the case in other countries allover the world,” he said.“We demand to minimize the number of ministerial posts in the region,” he added.

The project stresses the necessity of the Kurdish political leadership “adopting a realistic policy to frame relations and alliances with Iraqi political parties.”

IRAQ: Move to evict squatters from Government Property

BAGHDAD, 7 January 2009 (IRIN)

- The Iraqi government has decided to evict all people who have been squatting in government buildings or on government land since the 2003 US-led invasion which toppled Saddam Hussein’s regime.

“The Iraqi Cabinet has decided to evict all squatters in or on government property - land, houses, residential buildings or offices. They will be given financial help to find alternative places to live,” said a government statement on 4 January.

It said committees would be set up to handle the evictions, which were due to begin on 1 January. Squatters had 60 days to leave or face legal action. “The process will include media advertisements and the holding of meetings between relevant government officials and the squatters to raise awareness and discuss the negative impact of squatting on government property,” the statement said. Grants of US$850 to US$4,300 would be paid to the squatters to help them find accommodation.

In the aftermath of the 2003 invasion, hundreds of homeless people scrambled to find somewhere to live. Many moved into government-owned property - mostly buildings used by officials of Saddam’s regime.

Most of these buildings were completely or partially damaged due to the bombardment by US-led coalition forces.

Protests

Since then the squatters have held demonstrations in Baghdad and elsewhere demanding financial aid, ownership or the right to rent. “We have no one, only God and the government to help us,” said Ali Keytan Mikhlif, a father of three believed to be in his early 40s. “We voted for this government in the last election,” Mikhlif said.

He lives in a residential complex in the Salihiyah area of central Baghdad where senior military officers of Saddam’s elite Republican Guards used to live. “We will stage demonstrations again and again. This money is not enough to build a room and we can’t go back to [live on] the street… We call on the government to make the properties over to us, allow us to rent, or build residential compounds for us.”

Mikhlif’s neighbour, Hussein Awad Nasser, said they were being unfairly treated: “Senior officials live in houses of former officials, and claim to be leasing them from the government, so why are we the only ones who should leave?” asked Nasser, a 38-year-old who sells newspapers from a kiosk. “I will pay as long as these officials pay and I will leave when these officials leave,” he said.

IRAQ: Budget cuts threaten IDP housing projects

IRAQ: Budget cuts threaten IDP housing projects

http://www.irinnews.org/report.aspx?ReportID=82209

BAGHDAD, 6 January 2009 (IRIN) - Lack of government funds could force the Ministry of Displacement and Migration to postpone until 2010 some housing projects designed to ease internal displacement, an official told IRIN on 4 January. "We asked for 40 billion Iraqi dinars [US$34.2 million] for the ministry's [2009] investment budget but we were told that only eight billion [$6.85 million] could be allocated.

This could prevent us from achieving our goals for this year," said Ali Shaalan, head of the Ministry's planning directorate. "A top priority is to buy land for housing projects. We have already finished feasibility studies and designs for some of them, and we laid the cornerstone of one of them last March in the southern province of Mayssan," Shaalan told IRIN.

Mayssan is about 350km south of Baghdad. Shaalan said other projects, such as one planned in Basra Province, could be postponed until 2010 "if there are insufficient allocations this year". In November 2008 the government cut $13 billion from its draft budget in light of falling oil prices (now down to around $47 a barrel from a summer peak of $147).

The government may have to revise its budget for a third time, as the second draft was based on an assumed oil price of $62 a barrel. Ambitious plans In February 2008 the ministry unveiled ambitious plans to build an unspecified number of residential compounds nationwide. Each compound would have 50 buildings and each building six apartments - allowing some 300 families to buy a unit. Schools, markets, mosques, electricity and water plants, health centres, police stations and other facilities were to have been built on each compound, but these plans are now on hold.

Shaalan said the ministry had a five-year plan, which it still hoped to implement, in which some 514 billion dinars (US$439.32 million) would be invested. Mayssan compound will cost $5 million and will be built on 8.09 hectares. The Mayssan project has started, but it is now not sure when it will be completed. He said no project was designed to change the demography of a province. Accommodation would be provided to both those who became internally displaced persons (IDPs) after 2003 and to expatriates willing to return.

Private sector to the rescue?

Hamid Hassan Nadhum, an independent Baghdad-based economic analyst has blamed the government for not heeding calls for more investment in infrastructure. "The government shrugged off calls that it should make use of international financial aid and record oil prices to pump money into housing and infrastructure projects. Instead it offered financial aid with no long-term plans," Nadhum said. "Now, I think the best way forward is to get local or foreign investors involved," he said.

The budget cutbacks, and subsequent postponement of some projects, disappointed Adel Hamza Salih al-Amiri, a 55-year-old father of four who is an IDP in a camp. He was dreaming of having an apartment thanks to one of the government housing projects. "We were dreaming of having a roof over our heads but now we realise we are still years away from achieving this dream," Al-Amiri said.

Iraq has been facing an accommodation and displacement crisis for nearly 25 years as a result of the 1980-88 Iraq-Iran war, the first Gulf War following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991 and the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.

According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), over 4.2 million Iraqis have left their homes, many in dire need of humanitarian care. Of these, some 2.2 million Iraqis are displaced internally, while some two million are in neighbouring countries, mainly Syria and Jordan.

Israel is Immune From Criticism

Cartoon by Carlos Latuff

January 5, 2009

A Galaxy of Partisan Propagandists
Israel is Immune From Criticism

By BRIAN CLOUGHLEY

The state of Israel has descended – plummeted – to one of the lowest levels of conscious barbarity that is currently evident in this horrible world.

Any nation that has behaved towards a subject people, as Israel has to Palestinians, is worthy only of utter contempt. On Sunday January 4 I heard a rabbi on the BBC's morning religious program saying that he supported Israel's air strikes on Gaza. A man of God actually endorsed the killing of hundreds of people. To say that I was – and am – aghast at the sentiment expressed is to put it very mildly. This religious leader, a person supposed to spread and preach tolerance, patience, charity and peace, was supporting war crimes of immense gravity. His approval of the killing of Arabs was blood-chilling.

And this rabbi was British. Here we have a British citizen supporting hatred and bigotry on a BBC religious program. But of course he isn't really British. He is an Israeli religious propagandist of British citizenship whose main allegiance is to Israel. There are thousands like him in the UK and the US. They unconditionally promote Tel Aviv's plans and policy and wield amazing influence over politicians and businesses. Killing Palestinians is Israeli policy, and these people spare no effort to justify it.

Here's a resident of Gaza talking to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz about the horrors experienced by Palestinians (and congratulations to Haaretz for having the courage to print it): "I keep the children away from the windows because the F-16s are in the air; I forbid them to play below because it's dangerous. They're bombing us from the sea and from the east, they're bombing us from the air. When the telephone works, people tell us about relatives or friends who were killed. My wife cries all the time. At night she hugs the children and cries. It's cold and the windows are open; there's fire and smoke in open areas; at home there's no water, no electricity, no heating gas. And you [the Israelis] say there's no humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Tell me, are you normal?"

No, they're not, is the short answer, and the ruthlessness is epitomised by the evil Israeli foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, who is using the Gaza war to establish her credentials as a reliably hard-nosed barbarian. She declares "there is no humanitarian crisis in the [Gaza] Strip and therefore there is no need for a humanitarian truce."

It was reported on January 5 that Israeli troops are using white phosphorus (WP) artillery shells in Gaza, supposedly to create smoke screens to conceal their advance.

American troops used WP – fondly known as Willy Pete – in their destruction of the Iraqi city of Fallujah, and the US tried to lie its way out of the war crime, but junior officers unintentionally blew the lies apart by writing in the magazine Field Artillery that "WP proved to be an effective and versatile munition. We used it for screening missions . . . and, later in the fight, as a potent psychological weapon against insurgents in trench lines and spider holes . . . We fired 'shake and bake' missions at the insurgents using WP to flush them out and high explosive shells (HE) to take them out."
In fact WP is an effective killer, and anyone who inhales particles will suffer a particularly hideous and painful death. As recorded by The Independent newspaper in Britain "In the aftermath of the battle [at Fallujah], the State Department's Counter Misinformation Office issued a statement saying that WP was only "used very sparingly in Fallujah, for illumination purposes. They were fired into the air to illuminate enemy positions at night [which isn't the propose of a smoke-shell], not at enemy fighters." When The Independent confronted the State Department with the first-hand accounts of soldiers who participated, an official accepted the mistake and undertook to correct its website." Big deal. Lie, lie and lie again, until you're found out and it's impossible to deny the facts. And the Israelis seem to be taking the example, as usual, and are stoutly denying what has been seen by independent witnesses.

Article two, Protocol III of the 1980 UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons states: "It is prohibited in all circumstances to make the civilian population as such, individual civilians or civilian objects, the object of attack by incendiary weapons." But Israel is only following the US example. "Shake and bake" is such an attractive military option that it would be a shame to spoil their fun, especially when it has rabbinical approval.

Here is part of what is laid out in Protocol 1, Additional to the Geneva Conventions, 1977 . . . General Protection Against Effects of Hostilities: "Among others, the following types of attacks are to be considered as indiscriminate: An attack which may be expected to cause incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians, damage to civilian objects, or a combination thereof, which would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated."

Israel, supported energetically by Washington (and using US-supplied aircraft, bombs and rockets), has caused "incidental loss of life" and general civilian casualties on an enormous scale. The Israeli military and the Israeli people knew full well that their genocidal attack on Gaza would kill civilians. The use of white phosphorous in built-up areas is worthy of the Nazis at their most brutal. Stalin and Mao would nod approvingly. It wasn't considered important that there would be countless civilian deaths. Nobody cares, and least of all American politicians.
The next secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, refuses to comment on the atrocities. The incoming vice-president has been silent. President-elect Obama? As Reuters reported : "Obama . . . has not commented on the Middle East crisis since Israel launched attacks on Gaza nine days ago.
His advisers insist that only President George W Bush can speak for America until then." But it was noted that "The president-elect has commented on the global economic crisis and his plans to try to pull the US economy out of recession."

Of course he has. And were it not for the power of Israel in America he would no doubt comment adversely on the slaughter in Gaza, because he is a decent man.

But Mr Obama dare not criticize Israel, even for its use of chemical shells. Nor can any American who wishes to enter or remain engaged in politics. The kiss of political death in the United States of America is to censure Israel. It can't be done.

And that is why apartheid is permitted in Israel; it's why the mass-punishment blockade was enforced months before the attack went in; and it's why the near-genocide in Gaza is allowed to continue.

Does anyone remember the hearing on the so-called Israeli-Palestine peace process in the US House of Representatives in February 2007? Of course not. It was a farce. And why was it such a revolting and hideous charade? – Because it was a three card trick.

The main witness, of the three cards who were called, was one Martin Indyk, a former official of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee which is the richest and most powerful lobby group in the country (two of whose members are currently under a mysteriously delayed investigation for spying for Israel). From there, inevitably, he went to be US ambassador in Tel Aviv. (And, incidentally, whose book on the Middle East was the subject of a glowing review in last week's Economist.) Another witness was David Makovsky of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (founded by Indyk; it's all very chummy in pro-Israel sewers), which is funded extensively by American interests that support Zionism. (Among other connections, it is closely associated with the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University.) And was the third witness a counter-balance to two energetic supporters of Zion? Could he or she present a rather less biased view of the Middle East? Perhaps a person who would make the point that Israel has contemptuously ignored UN Security Council resolutions concerning illegal occupation of Palestinian lands?

Not a bit. The third member was a comic quasi-intellectual character called Daniel Pipes who once declared that Muslim immigrants to the US were "brown-skinned peoples cooking strange foods and not exactly maintaining Germanic standards of hygiene." (Germanic? – How quaint.) Pipes founded the Middle East Forum (MEF) which encourages university students in America to report lecturers and professors who they consider to be anti-Israel or pro-Palestinian. (In Hitler's Germany there were awards given to young people who identified and reported those they thought to be pro-Jewish; I know a very elderly German lady who did this when she was 15. She is now terribly ashamed at the memory, because she actually informed on her own father. How times change. Or don't, of course.)

In 2006 Pipes was given the 'Guardian of Zion' award, an annual prize to a prominent supporter of Israel, by the Rennert Center for Jerusalem Studies at Bar-Ilan University in Israel.

With a galaxy of partisan propagandists like Indyk, Makovsky and Pipes being the only people selected to give evidence on Israel-Palestine to the nation's legislators in Washington, there was no chance whatever that the Congressional Sub-Committee would be presented with a balanced view of the Israel-Palestine problem. The deck was stacked, and the legislators listened. They had no choice, because of the power of the Israel lobby. They've been shaken and baked.

There is little doubt that the bias towards Israel will continue in the legislature and administration of the United States of America, no matter what Obama might really think, and no matter how many Palestinian children the Zionists have slaughtered.
The Israelis are behaving like genocidal filth, but those who stay silent about their atrocities are not far behind in the gutter stakes.

Brian Cloughley's book about the Pakistan army, War, Coups and Terror, has just been published by Pen & Sword Books (UK) and will be published in the US in May by Skyhorse (New York).

Değerli okurlarım;

Allah ziyaretinizi kabul etsin sevgili dostum Abbas Kasap..
